Unlike standard coating solutions, slurries contain heavy solid particles and exhibit extremely high viscosity. Getting a uniform film requires a specialized approach. This article explains the unique physical behaviors of slurry and what you need in a dip coater to handle it successfully.

1. The Risks of Particle Settling and Agglomeration

How Heavy Particles Cause Uneven Active Materials

The defining feature of a slurry (suspension) is that it is full of solid, undissolved particles—such as lithium metal oxides and carbon—floating in a solvent. Over time, gravity pulls these heavy particles to the bottom of the tank (settling). The particles can also stick together to form large clumps (agglomeration). If you dip a substrate into poorly mixed slurry, the distribution of active materials will be uneven, and the surface will be rough. This directly degrades the battery’s lifespan, capacity, and charge/discharge performance.

2. Dripping and Stringing in High-Viscosity Liquids

Viscosity Limits Your Withdrawal Speed

In addition to solid particles, battery slurries are incredibly thick and viscous. Highly viscous liquids love to cling to the substrate, naturally creating a very thick film as you pull the part out.

If you try to pull the part out quickly to achieve a thinner electrode layer, the slurry will get dragged up excessively. Gravity will then cause it to drip heavily down the part. Worse, as the part leaves the liquid surface, the sticky slurry can stretch and create messy strings (stringing). When working with high-viscosity liquids, pulling fast guarantees poor quality.

3. [Solution] High-Torque Motors and Precise Liquid Management

SDI’s Heavy-Duty Dip Coaters Withstand High Loads

The golden rule for coating thick, heavy slurries into a thin, uniform layer is to pull the part out extremely slowly and forcefully. However, pulling a substrate out of a thick sludge creates immense drag (physical resistance). Standard, cheap motors will struggle against this resistance, causing the pulling speed to stutter or stall entirely.

SDI dip coaters are equipped with high-torque drive systems that do not flinch under heavy loads. No matter how thick your slurry is, our machines maintain the exact programmed ultra-slow speed (down to mm/min) without a single stutter, completely preventing drips and stringing. We also offer customized solutions for battery development, such as integrated in-tank stirring systems to keep heavy particles perfectly suspended during the entire coating process.

▼ Master High-Viscosity Slurries: Check SDI’s Product Lineup
https://www.sdicompany.com/en/products/

Contact us

Manufacturing electrodes for lithium-ion batteries and catalyst layers for fuel cells requires coating substrates with…

[2

post-1094","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-dip-coat","en-US
